Continuous self-improvement, honesty and ethics. These are just a few of the core values being taught to children from the Children’s Aid Society by a group of student teachers from the National Institute of Education, Singapore (NIE). They also happen to mirror the core values of PropNex,
Singapore’s largest real estate company.
That is why when the student teachers of NIE approached PropNex for sponsorship of their Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) project, PropNex warmly supported them.
The GESL is a service-learning community outreach programme that all first-year student teachers at NIE have to go through. This Group 9’s Sunshiners Project comprises a series of workshops at the Children’s Aid Society to 35 children, aged 6 to 14.
“We aim to impart character building values to the children,” said Nurhayati Binte Abdul Rahman, Leader of GESL Group 9.
The other objectives of the event are to spend time with the children and to host a special event for them, as well as to gain valuable experience as teachers in managing young children.
“PropNex is, and always has always been, a service-oriented organisation,” said Adam Tan, Corporate Communications & Marketing Manager of PropNex. “For instance, in 2004, our contributions to the ST Pocket Money Fund were recognised by our Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.”
Held over three workshops from 2 to 17 June 2008, the Sunshiners Project will use games and skits to teach the young children values such as responsibility, respect, integrity and honesty, amongst others.
“When NIE approached us,” said Adam Tan, “I felt that this was something PropNex had to do. So many of the values they proposed to teach the children are inherent in our own organisational core values and beliefs. Sunshiners Project 2008 was a unique method of how PropNex could help spread and instill these values beyond our associates.”
